HISTORY

Odlum Cup Indvidual Winners from 1945

The club changed its name in the early 1950's from Carlow Athletic Club to St. Laurence O'Toole Athletic Club in order to cater for the change that was taking place in Irish Athletics at that time. The Carlow Athletic Club used land provided by landowners in the region of the town for training purposes, while members also pounded around the roads in the general vicinity of Carlow town. St. Laurence O'Toole Athletic Club, now has its own facilities

Why the name, St. Laurence O'Toole

St. Laurence O'Toole was born in 1128 near Castledermot, Co. Kildare. He became an abbot of Glendalough, after he was taken into sanctuary there. Despite his importance, he was holy and virtuous and his charity was extraordinary. He died at EU in Normandy on the 14th November, 1180. He was canonized in 1226, the last Irish saint until Oliver Plunkett in 1975.
